Asking God Questions But Hearing Silence? Here’s Why
February 5, 2026 5:03 pm
Asking God questions is one of the most natural things we do as believers—yet so often the silence that follows leaves us frustrated and wondering why He isn’t answering.
You prayed, waited, asked again—and still heard only quiet. It’s frustrating, even discouraging. I’ve been there more times than I can count.
The good news? God isn’t ignoring you. Most of the time, when we don’t hear an answer, it’s because something in how we’re asking needs adjusting. Today I want to share three common reasons why God may not answer—and what you can do differently so you start hearing Him clearly.
1. Asking the Wrong Questions
God promises to hear and answer when we ask according to His will. If the question isn’t aligned with His will—or isn’t something He wants you to know right now—silence is often His kind response.
Before you keep repeating the same question, pause and ask this one first:
“Lord, is it Your will for me to know the answer to this?”
He will always answer that question. If the answer is no, release it. If yes, keep asking with confidence.
For years, I asked God questions about situations, outcomes, and decisions—and got only silence. I kept pressing, but nothing.
One day, I finally asked Him, “Lord, are You even willing to answer this?” He gently said, “Son, there are things I want you to know and things I don’t want you to know.” That shifted everything. Instead of frustration, I felt peace in trusting His timing.
“Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.” (1 John 5:14–15 NKJV)
What if the reason you are asking God questions that are His will, but still not hearing His answer? It could be unbelief.
2. Unbelief – Not Expecting God to Say “Yes”
Even when your question lines up with God’s will, unbelief can block you from hearing the answer—especially if deep down you don’t expect Him to say “Yes.”
When you pray, believe you receive. Read the promise out loud: “Whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.” (Mark 11:24)
Ask, believe, receive, have. That’s God’s order. Askers are receivers.
For a long time, I never heard God say “Yes” to my questions—even when I knew they were His will. Instead, I’d hear “Indeed,” “Of course,” or “Absolutely.”
One day, He showed me why: I didn’t expect “Yes” because I rarely heard it from my earthly dad. That lack of expectation was blocking me from hearing God’s “Yes”.
Once I repented and started believing He delights to say “Yes” to His children, the answers started coming clearly—and often quickly.
“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.” (Matthew 7:7–8 NKJV)
Since you are an Asker, realize that God GIVES to you when you ask. It may take time for you to receive His answer. So be patient. Do you know why? Because the third reason could be what’s hindering you from hearing God’s answers.
3. Impatience – Not Waiting on the Lord
God is never in a hurry. He knows your question before you ask it. But He often waits for the right moment to answer—building trust, character, and dependence in the waiting.
Instead of playing the “guessing game” (trying to figure it out yourself), rest in His presence. Wait with peace. Ask, believe, and trust His timing. The more impatient you are, the more you crowd out His still, small voice.
I’ve asked God simple things—like someone’s name I forgot—and within seconds started running through the alphabet trying to remember it myself. That’s not waiting on God; that’s taking the answer back into my own hands.
When I learned to ask, release, and rest, I began hearing Him before I even finished the question. He’s All-Knowing—He wants us to trust His pace.
“But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength…” (Isaiah 40:31 NKJV)
God loves it when you ask Him questions. He’s not annoyed or distant—He’s inviting you into a deeper conversation. If you’ve been hearing silence, try these three adjustments:
- Ask if it’s His will for you to know
- Believe He delights to say “Yes”
- Wait patiently without guessing
The answers will come. Sometimes immediately, sometimes in His perfect timing—but they will come.
