How To Find God

How do people find God? The honest answer is: most people are not taught how. Yet deep inside every heart is a longing that God Himself placed there—a pull toward something eternal, something more. People search for success, love, meaning, security, peace… but so often they don’t realize they are actually searching for Him. They just don’t know how to look in the right place.
That was true for me once. I spent years searching in all the wrong directions—chasing success, achievement, and the next big breakthrough—without realizing the One I was truly longing for was right there, waiting to be known.
My Own Search Began with Success
In 1991, I wanted to become a motivational speaker. I wanted to help people become successful, live their best lives, and reach their potential. I studied books, listened to motivational speakers, took notes, practiced speeches—everything the world said would lead to success. But the more I chased those things, the emptier I felt. What I didn’t know then was that I wasn’t really looking for success. I was looking for God.
The Bible records a moment when the disciples were searching for Jesus, and Peter said to Him, “Lord, everyone is looking for you” (Mark 1:37). That statement is just as true today. People are looking for Him—they just don’t always know it.
They chase careers, relationships, money, pleasure, approval, control… distractions that keep them from the One their hearts were made for. That longing doesn’t come from nowhere. God placed it there Himself.
God Placed Eternity in Every Heart
Scripture tells us clearly: “He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.” (Ecclesiastes 3:11)
That eternity-shaped place inside every person is a God-given desire to know Him. It can’t be satisfied by anyone. Even when people don’t have the language for it, they feel the ache. They don’t know how to find God.
Acts 17:27 says, “God wanted them to look for him and perhaps search all around for him and find him, though he is not far from any of us.” For those who don’t know how to find God, He wants you to remember this about Him:
God is not hiding. He is findable. He is obvious—once the distractions are set aside.
Jeremiah 29:13 gives the clearest promise: “You will seek me and find me, when you search for me with all your heart.” This is a CLUE how to find God today.
Wholehearted seeking is the key. Half-hearted searching will always be distracted. But when someone turns to God with sincerity—when they say, “I want to know You, not just what You can do for me”—He makes sure they find Him. That is His word, His character, and His promise.
But even with all that searching, something was still missing—until I finally turned from chasing what the world offered and began looking for the One who could truly satisfy the longing in my heart.
From Searching for Success to Finding the Savior
My own journey shifted when I finally admitted that everything I was chasing wasn’t enough. I started reading the Bible—not just for principles, but to know the Author. The more I read, the more I realized Jesus is the Truth I had been searching for all along. He wasn’t just giving me keys to success; He was the Key. The more I studied His Word, the more I came to know Him—not just about Him, but Him.
Watch this powerful declaration: That’s My King
That pursuit never stopped. The more I knew Him, the more I wanted to know Him. I began to recognize His voice. I discovered gifts He placed in me: teaching, prophesying, words of knowledge, wisdom, writing, and speaking on His behalf. None of it was about me; it was all about pointing others to Him.
Thomas Aquinas captured this beautifully when he said: “To fall in love with God is the greatest romance; to seek him the greatest adventure; to find him, the greatest human achievement.” And once you truly begin to know Him, something beautiful happens—you start to realize just how near He has always been.
He Is Closer Than You Realize
He is closer than anyone realizes. Closer than your next breath. Nearer than your own heartbeat. In you, around you, before you, behind you. He is not far from any one of us.
Brother Lawrence expressed it simply: “In order to know God, we must often think of Him; and when we come to love Him, we shall then also think of Him often, for our heart will be with our treasure.” That’s the secret of intimacy—thinking of Him often, letting our heart rest with our true Treasure.
So the question isn’t whether God can be found. The question is whether we will seek Him with all our hearts. Those who do will discover what countless others have found: He was waiting all along—findable, obvious, and full of love.
