5 Tips for managing distractions

Do you like being controlled? If you are like most people, your answer is No. But unfortunately without you even being aware of it, distractions are controlling part of your life.

A distraction can amuse, entertain or divert you. It can also divide attention or can prevent you from concentrating. Let me prove it to you right now.

Let’s see if you can read this entire blog post WITHOUT being distracted.

GO!

Today I want to share with you 5 tips for managing distractions in your life. All of these tips are simple and doable. I highly encourage you to implement them today.

1. Turn Off Phone Notifications

One of the biggest distractions in my life for years was the notifications I received each day on my phone. When I got my first Smartphone, I turned on notifications for Facebook, Messenger and emails.

Do you how many times a day I was getting notifications? Way too many.

Why did I turn on the notifications in the first place? I did NOT want to miss out anything. Why?

I had a “fear of missing out” that controlled me for years.

Ask yourself, “Do I have a fear of missing out?”

Be honest with yourself.

If you no longer want to be controlled by notifications, my first tip is to turn off as many notifications on your phone as possible.

Before I share the next step, have you already been distracted? Just checking.

2. Unsubscribe To Email Subscriptions

One day the Lord asked me if I knew how long it took me to check my emails every day. I really did not know so I timed myself. You are going to be SHOCKED at how long it took me to go through all of my emails.

90 minutes a day!

Yes. How come?

I subscribed to way too many Email Subscriptions. Once I was aware of just how time I was wasting each day, I decided to scroll down to the bottom of almost all of those Email Subscriptions and clicked on the unsubscribe button that freed me and will free you too.

So how do you decide which emails to unsubscribe to?

Unsubscribe to the ones you skim through, that don’t apply to your life anymore and are time wasters.

I promise you, when you do follow this one tip, it will free up more time for you to do what you were created to do.

3. Limit Your Time On Social Media

I’ve got to be completely transparent with you. Last month I caught myself scrolling on Facebook wasting my time most on videos. What I realized by making those unfortunate decisions, it really effected my emotions and productivity.

Again you and are I are in control of what we allow as a distraction in our lives.

So I asked myself the question:

“Why do I want to scroll on Facebook and watch videos?”

Honestly, to be entertained. Also to be inspired. But mainly I was avoiding what I really needed to do.

So I encourage you to ask yourself:

“Why am I on Social Media?”

I also suggest you set a time limit on how often you are on Social Media each day. Personally I am only on Facebook to post, check notifications and respond to messages. It only takes a few minutes a day.

Did you know you can set a time limit on your Social Media apps on your phone? (HINT)

When you follow these simple tips, you will feel empowered.

4. Limit TV Time

Fortunately I do not have a TV so its not a distraction in my life. It was for decades. I would waste so many hour every day, week and year watching one of the biggest distractions in our society.

However I have watched YouTube Videos instead. I used to watch a lot Sports Highlights, Comedians and Inspirational videos. Now I limit it to watching what inspires me to fulfill my purpose.

If you have a struggle watching TV, ask yourself the “Why Question.”

“Why do I watch this TV program?”

Be honest with yourself. When I started to do this, it was an eye opening experience. One of my favorite shows for years was NCIS. For me it wasn’t the Why Question, that helped me stop watching it.

What help me to not watch it anymore was to really look at what this show is really about: Death, violence, drama, humor.

I will tell you, once you stop watching TV shows after awhile you won’t miss them. You get to control your TV watching instead of TV controlling you. So I encourage you to set a time limit each week watching it or stop watching it all together.

5. Limit Scrolling On The Internet

I can’t tell you how many hours I have WASTED just scrolling on the internet. I like to do research.

But now I am now being much more selective what I do my research on. It has made me much more productive with my life. One of the biggest changes I made was asking:

“Why do I want know this?”

Many times I would find a video series on marketing for example. I would watch 10+ hours, take a lot of notes and NOT take action. What a waste of time.

It really comes down to you knowing your WHY for scrolling on the internet. Plus you need to VALUE time like never before. Again you get to choose whether distractions are controlling you OR are you in control of the distractions.

Now you have 5 tips for managing distractions that you can apply in your life today!

When you decide to turn off notifications, unsubscribe from email subscriptions, limit your time on Social Media, limit TV time and scrolling on the internet, you will experience a new found freedom.

Do you want to be controlled by distractions anymore?

I hope these 5 tips for managing distractions will help you take more control of the options in your life.

The good news is… its YOUR CHOICE!

Marie the Lord created you to KNOW Him. He made you to hear His still, small voice. He sent Holy Spirit to be your Teacher. Jesus said, “My sheep hear My voice, I know them and they follow ME.” Check out my “Teachings” page on my site where you can get over 2:45 of teaching on how to hear God more clearly.

YES! I was able to read the entire post with no distractions. This is partly because I am taking your class and I have To be accountable so I pay closer attention to the distractions as to not let them hinder me from spending time with God. I am learning to be intentional about my time with The Lord. I am so grateful!

I’m thankful I haven’t struggled with any of those because early on I decided I wasn’t wasting my life on Facebook or any other social media outlet. I do listen to preachers and teachers on TV and grow in my walk with the Lord.

Bonnie, it’s so good you chose not to follow the crowd and instead listen to what God is saying.
