As followers of Jesus Christ, we are called to a life of discipleship and obedience. This post explores three common mistakes believers make when following Jesus: misunderstanding leadership decisions, struggling with surrender, and following others instead of Christ Himself.
By recognizing these pitfalls, we can realign our focus and deepen our relationship with our true Leader.
Making Leadership Decisions
If I were to ask you if you knew the decisions your leader is leading you to make today, would you be able to tell me?
Think about this for a moment.
God created you FOR HIM.
Since that is true, all the decisions He makes are FOR HIM. Did you know one of the best decisions is to seek His face? What happens when you behold the face of Jesus? He will transform you from glory to glory in His image.
Before you were born, God knew every decision He made for you.
Would you like to know what those decisions are?
Psalms 139:15 reveals to you that God has already predetermined plans for you.
“Your eyes saw my unfinished body. In your book all of them were written. Days were determined, before any of them existed.”
Since every day has already been determined by God, then you can trust Him to reveal to you the decisions that will be made each day for Him.
If you believe God’s decisions are the best, then be a follower of God’s decisions.
Unwilling to Surrender
How do you know when you completely surrender your all to Jesus?
You no longer are living for yourself. If you think about the word “surrender”, it means to give up control.
Are you still trying to control your life? Do you have a fear of letting go of control?
If so, the devil has convinced you that it’s better to have control of your life instead of Jesus. He is covering up the truth. Do you know ONE thing the devil does not want you to believe?
He doesn’t want you to believe that you can trust God’s love for you.
When you do believe in God’s love for you, then you are more than willing to let go of control. You are more than willing to surrender all to Jesus.
“Then Jesus said to his followers, “If any of you want to be my follower, you must stop thinking about yourself and what you want. You must be willing to carry the cross that is given to you for following me.” Matthew 16:24
Did you notice what Jesus tells you to stop doing? Stop focusing on what you want. Instead, focus on what Jesus is leading you to do FOR HIM. He has given you a cross for a reason. It’s to remind you that you must surrender all to Jesus.
Following Others Instead
Do you remember decades ago when they were making movies about Martians invading Earth? When they found a human being, what was one of the first things they said?
Take me to your leader.
If someone would ask you that today, who would you send them to?
Many Christians rely completely on what others are telling them to do. They gravitate to those who have a close relationship with Jesus. The mistake they are making is they are following the wrong leader.
How many times have you heard a Christian quote their favorite minister, but cannot tell you the last thing Jesus said to them?
Who are you listening to?
Who are you following?
What happens is when you listen to someone else to follow them instead of Jesus, then you miss out on what He is saying to you.
Conclusion
Jesus requires intentionality and a willingness to surrender our own desires and plans.
By avoiding these three common mistakes – misunderstanding God’s leadership decisions, resisting full surrender, and following others instead of Christ – we can cultivate a more authentic and transformative relationship with our Savior.
Let us commit to seeking His face daily, trusting in His love, and allowing Him to lead us in every aspect of our lives. As we do so, we’ll discover the joy and fulfillment that comes from truly following Jesus Christ.
