How To Understand The Bible – 3 Best Study Tips
July 8, 2022 8:13 pmIf you truly want to understand the Bible, it will take time and effort to study the Scriptures. The 5 best study tips will help you in your journey of not only knowing what God said in the Bible but more importantly how to apply the Scriptures in your life.
Before you learn the practical steps in studying the Bible, you first must know the meaning of the word understanding.
Understanding: to become aware of the significance; to become aware of the intended meaning.
You have two choices when it comes to studying the Bible. You can read it and gain knowledge. The other option is you can study it to apply in your life. Which one do you believe will benefit you the most?
Reading the Bible out loud
If there was one book that God would want you to read out loud, which one would it be? The Bible. If there was one book the devil does NOT want you to read out loud, which one would it be? The Bible. Since God wants you to read His Scriptures out loud, there must be a reason.
In Matthew 13:23, Jesus says, “But he who received seed on the good ground is he who hears and understand it, who indeed bears fruit and produces: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.”
In order for you to first understand the Bible, you MUST hear the Word of God. The best way to do that is to read it out loud with your own mouth. You will “hear” things you would not if you only read in your mind.
The best advice I can give you is when you read the Bible out loud is to read it SLOWLY.
Why is that so important? Because you will hear the significance of what God wrote in His Holy Scriptures. The slower you read it, the more you can comprehend and understand the Word of God like never before.
Use the Strong’s Concordance
When you are studying a passage of Scripture, it’s best for you to know the meaning and definition of each word. You don’t want to assume you know the meaning of a word and be mistaken, do you?
If you read John 21: 15-16, Jesus asked Simon if he loved Him. Simon’s response was, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love you.” If you look up the definition of the word love for what Jesus spoke and what Simon spoke, they are different words and have different meanings.
Jesus used the word agape and Simon responded with the word phileo.
This is a perfect example of WHY you need to use a tool like the Strong’s Concordance to study the Bible so you know the meaning of each word. Remember, your goal is to understand each verse.
Learning from the Holy Spirit
The good news is the Bible comes with a Teacher and His name is Holy Spirit. Jesus tells His disciples in John 14:26, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things I said to you.”
Imagine having your own personal teacher who truly knows, understands, and comprehends every word in the Bible as your Teacher. You have access to Him 24/7. Every time you study the Bible, ask Him to lead you through the Scriptures.
James 4:2 tells you that you have not because you ask not.
If you have not asked Holy Spirit to help you, He waiting for you to ask Him. He is so excited to take you on an adventure into the Scriptures.
If you are not sure where to study each day, who do you think you should ask. Holy Spirit, your Bible Teacher.
Now that you have three simple, practical steps on how to understand the Bible, which step are you going to start with: Reading the Bible out loud, Use the Strong’s Concordance, or Learning from the Holy Spirit?
